When you are playing your games, do you ever sit there, and say, “Gee, I wish this game focused more on the story!” or “I want a game that is story driven, where I don’t have to worry about dying!” Well, if you are still looking for a game like that, Maize will certainly fit the description!
You start the game near a locked gate blocking the way to a river and a pathway leading to a cornfield. Travelling through the cornfield will reveal that it is a maze; a single wrong turn may irritate the player. The eerie music and yellow filter, along with the abandoned farm setting, gave off a Twilight Zone vibe. As you go through the maze, you will come across documents and signs that lead you to realize that this is not an ordinary farm. Also, there is a very large elevator in the middle of the cornfield, and talking corn with British accents. Yes, you read that correctly, talking corn…
But that is where the game shines. The outrageous story in this game makes you want to find out why there is talking corn in the first place. You will, with the help of documents and puzzle solving, find out why the area is abandoned. And finally, why is there a talking mechanical teddy bear following you? Is it on your side? Is it evil? Of course, you will have to play the game to find out!
Part of a puzzle.
Maize is story driven, with elements of puzzle solving. While I can see people scratching their heads a few times over some of the puzzles, I did not have any issues with them. If you have around three hours to spare, you can beat the game in one sitting. As far as your character dying, you can’t. The game has no life bar, no power ups, no upgradable parts. The game is simply walking around, reading documents, collecting items, and solving puzzles in order to advance the intriguing story.
If you are looking for an action-packed game, you will not find it in Maize, and that is fine, because, again, the game’s setting will make you want to find out what happened to the farm, the workers, and the obvious talking corn.
The question you have to ask yourself is, who is the main character?
